How does the nozzle on the fuel pump know when to shut off to avoid overfilling the vehicle?
Clayton
Kansas City, Kansas

Dear Clayton:

As How Things Work
from the University of Virginia explains, gasoline nozzles have a small
hole at the end that becomes blocked when gasoline rises to the top of
the tank. Once this happens, the pressure drops inside a valve system
built into the pump. This cuts off the gas flow.

If you want the nitty-gritty details, check out The Straight Dope.
And if you don't believe us, check the end of the gas pump the next
time you're at the station. You should be able to see the valve system
hole.

We also found a suggestion
from Dr. Ezra of Cornell University. He states the valve system is
sensitive
to air pressure within the tank, which increases as the tank fills with
gas. Dr. Ezra, we respect your diploma, but this is simply not true.
And as to the rumors that cell phones can start gas station fires, Engadget

tells us that it just ain't so. Sadly, this hasn't stopped a
Connecticut state senator from trying to introduce a bill requiring
drivers to hang up their cell phones before filling their tank.
Yeesh.

ž "The frustration is all too familiar: Call a company's customer service line, and chances are you'll have a hard time reaching a human."..more at article link (interesting) and the site is paulenglish.com, (add /ivr to go to the cheats directly). This was just on nightly news on the TV so I imagine his site is being hammered, as I can't get in at all, but I did find the article..Wtf

  Bartender jailed for lethal tequila
Cnn.com says...
According to a district court in the southwestern city of Hokksund the bartender, whose name was withheld, pleaded guilty to serving 34-year-old Leif Henning Nilsen 19 shots of the strong Mexican liquor in 90 minutes at the Spiseriet restaurant in May 2004.
Nilsen lost consciousness and died three days later.
The court said it could not hold the bartender accountable for the death itself, but sentenced him to prison for illegally serving alcohol to a clearly intoxicated person.
The ruling said the bartender intentionally contributed to the excess by drinking shots of water, tricking the victim into what he thought was a drinking contest.
"In the court's opinion, it is hard to imagine a more serious case of excessive alcohol serving," said the ruling, which also revoked the bartender's right to have any job that involves serving alcohol for five years.
The restaurant was in Vikersund, about 35 kilometers (20 miles) west of the capital, Oslo.

Man drinks on his ovn responsibility, so to drink 19 shots his head must been gone on vacation in that time.
its suicidal :)

  Butterfly wings work like LEDs
When scientists developed an efficient device for emitting light, they hadn't realised butterflies have been using the same method for 30 million years.
Fluorescent patches on the wings of African swallowtail butterflies work in a very similar way to high emission light emitting diodes (LEDs).
These high emission LEDs are an efficient variation on the diodes used in electronic equipment and displays.
The University of Exeter, UK, research appears in the journal Science.
In 2001, Alexei Erchak and colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) demonstrated a method for building a more efficient LED.
Most light emitted from standard LEDs cannot escape, resulting in what scientists call a low extraction efficiency of light.

  Google shares top $400 threshold
Shares in Google have risen above $400 each for the first time, capping a strong period of growth for the internet search firm.
The latest of these is Google Base - unveiled on Wednesday - which will enable people to search for different information collected from consumers and businesses.

Other recent initiatives include a plan to supply miniature satellite maps to mobile phones as well as a controversial online library service providing digital prints of books.

The market has also been encouraged by Google's financial performance.

The company reported a sharp rise in profits in the last quarter, as net income rose to $381.2m (£215m) from $52m in the same period last year.

Sales in the three months to the end of September totalled $1.57bn - 96% higher than the same period in 2004.

Most of the Google's revenue comes from advertising sales.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Legal fight hits 'music pirates'

The global recording industry has launched its largest wave of legal action against people suspected of sharing music files on the internet.
The latest move targeted 2,100 alleged uploaders using peer-to-peer (P2P) networks in 16 nations including the UK, France, Germany and Italy.
File-sharers in Switzerland, Sweden, Argentina, Singapore and Hong Kong are also facing cases for the first time.
Thousands of people have agreed to pay compensation since the campaign began.
The number of cases brought by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) outside the US since March 2004 now stands at more than 3,800.
In the US, civil lawsuits have been brought against more than 15,597 people since September 2003 and there have been 3,590 settlements.
'Significant escalation'
The IFPI said users of P2P networks including FastTrack, Gnutella, eDonkey, DirectConnect, BitTorrent, WinMx and SoulSeek were facing action.
"This is a significant escalation of our enforcement actions against people who are uploading and distributing copyrighted music on p2p networks," said IFPI chief John Kennedy.
"Thousands of people - mostly internet-savvy men in their 20s or 30s - have learnt to their cost the legal and financial risks involved in file-sharing copyrighted music in large quantities."
Court rulings
Individual cases are generally brought by the national associations representing the recording industry, and in some cases by the labels, as civil complaints.
In some nations, including Italy and Sweden, file-sharers are subject to criminal prosecutions.
The UK record industry has so far brought 97 cases, with a further 65 covered by the latest action.
More than £140,000 in compensation has been paid to the British Phonographic Industry by 71 individuals. Those who fail to resolve cases face civil court action.
The IFPI announcement comes after court rulings in the US, Australia and South Korea found P2P services can also be held liable for downloading by their users.
Earlier this month, US file-sharing group Grokster agreed to halt distributing its software to settle a long-running copyright case launched by the entertainment industry.

Mirrors Can Trick The Brain Into Recovering From Persistent Pain, Research Suggests
Looking in a mirror at a reflection of their healthy hand could help people with persistent pain ease their symptoms and eventually overcome their problem, say scientists in the latest edition of the journal Clinical Medicine.
The treatment, being developed by researchers from the University of Bath and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (RNHRD), is based on a new theory about how people experience pain even when doctors can find no direct cause.
This ‘cortical’ model of pain suggests that the brain’s image of the body can become faulty, resulting in a mismatch between the brain’s movement control systems and its sensory systems, causing a person to experience pain when they move a particular hand, foot or limb.
Researchers believe that this kind of problem could be behind a host of pain-related disorders, such as complex regional pain syndrome and repetitive strain injury.
In an investigation of whether this system can be corrected using mirrors to trick the brain, researchers asked a number of patients with complex regional pain syndrome (a chronic debilitating condition affecting 10,000 – 20,000 patients in the UK at any one time) to carry out routine exercises in front of a mirror.
More than half experienced pain relief during and after the exercise and further investigations showed that even greater improvements can be achieved if the tasks are practiced beforehand.
“By using a mirror reflection of a normal limb to convince the brain that everything is alright, we have found that we can correct this imbalance and help alleviate pain in complex regional pain syndrome,” said Dr Candy McCabe who works in the University of Bath’s School for Health and the RNHRD.
“We think it is the same system that is triggered when you are running down stairs, miss the last step and then feel a jolt of surprise.
“In missing that bottom step, you jar the prediction that your brain had made about what was going to happen, triggering an alert to the body that things are not as you expected, hence the feeling of surprise.
“This is because in most cases normal awareness and experience of our limbs is often based on the predicted state rather than the actual state.
“When the two do not match we think sensations are generated to alert the body that things are not as it thought – rather like an early warning mechanism.
“If the discrepancy is very large [like in the mirror experiment described below] then pain may be experienced, as pain is the body’s ultimate warning mechanism.
“We think that this system may be responsible for a range of disorders where patients feel pain for apparently no clinical reason.
“Somehow the brain’s image of the body differs from what it senses. When the patient moves their hand, foot or limb, they experience pain as a result.
“This could have important implications for the therapeutic management of people with chronic pain.”
In a separate study published in the journal Rheumatology earlier this year, researchers from Bath, Cardiff and Exeter showed that it is possible to create sensations and feelings in one limb by looking at a reflection of the other limb in a mirror.
They asked 41 healthy people to sit with a mirror at right angles in front of them so that they could only see one side of their body at a time.
The volunteers were then asked to move their limbs in the same direction at the same time, and then in opposite directions whilst viewing the mirror reflection of one hand.
Within 20 seconds of starting, more than two thirds of people involved in the trial reported some kind of sensation in their hidden limb when the movement they were seeing in the mirror was different to what they were feeling in the hidden hand, for example by moving their hands in different directions.
These sensations included numbness, pins and needles, a change in temperature and moderate aching, despite receiving no neural damage to that limb.
“Some people felt pain in their arm after as little as twenty seconds but not all of our volunteers experienced these disturbances,” said Dr McCabe.
“It would appear that innate susceptibility plays a part, with some individuals more vulnerable to, or simply better at detecting, these sensations.”
The research is funded by the Arthritis Research Campaign.

  France In State of Emergency
PARIS - The French capital and its suburbs, as well as more than 30 other cities, are covered by a new state-of-emergency decree that gives police sweeping powers to quell unrest, the government said Wednesday. The emergency decree empowers officials to put troublemakers under house arrest, ban or limit the movement of people and vehicles, confiscate weapons and close public spaces where gangs gather.

Towns included on the list stretched from Nice on the Mediterranean to Strasbourg on the German border to Le Havre on the English Channel, giving an indication of how widespread the unrest has become.

Other major cities included Marseille and Lyon.

Seven suburban regions of Paris were on the list, including the Seine-Saint-Denis area where the unrest broke out nearly two weeks ago in areas with large immigrant populations.

Damn shame, but still i wish that something like that happens in my country. Some people do deserve it...

The Human Brain Seen as Master of Time
Your brain is a time machine with three modes that control everything from instantaneous tasks like moving to maintaining long trains of thought and ultimately staying in synch with night and day.
That's what scientists say. But they have no clue how most of it works. Empathy allows us to feel the emotions of others, to identify and understand their feelings and motives and see things from their perspective. How we generate empathy remains a subject of intense debate in cognitive science.
Some scientists now believe they may have finally discovered its root. We're all essentially mind readers, they say.
Scientists Say Everyone Can Read Minds.
I think we are stupid if you look our big brains.
I say everyone haves dreams and they sure have something in common with reall life.
I think History haves all the answers.
